SALINA

FLOATING SOLAR DESALINATION
Freshwater, powered by sunlight and the sea.
SALINA is developing floating solar desalination for coastal, island and water-scarce communities.
Built in Malta · Tested outdoors · Active R&D
ORIGIN STORY
From Malta's salt pans to freshwater
For centuries, Malta's shallow salt pans have used sunlight to evaporate seawater and leave salt behind. SALINA draws inspiration from that relationship between sun and sea but seeks to recover the freshwater.
We are developing a floating solar-thermal system that brings water production closer to where it is needed, without relying on large-scale desalination infrastructure.
SALINA. Physics at the Surface.
Purpose beyond it.
01 — Capture sunlight
Solar energy is concentrated near the water surface rather than heating the entire body of water.
The floating evaporator allows passive water and salt exchange with the larger saline body beneath it.
02 — Work with the water
03 — Recover freshwater
Water vapour is condensed into freshwater, while current research focuses on recovering and reusing the released heat.
HOW IT WORKS

Built through research.
Tested in the real world.
SALINA builds on wick-free, thermally localised evaporation technologies. Our work translates these principles into practical evaporator design, buoyancy control, predictive modelling, condenser research, integrated systems and outdoor prototypes.
SALINA has progressed from laboratory experiments to integrated outdoor prototype testing in Malta.
RESEARCH IN PROGRESS
THE NEXT CHAPTER
More water from every ray of sun.
Our current research is focused on recovering the heat released during condensation and putting it to work again.
By reusing this energy to drive additional evaporation, SALINA aims to increase freshwater production without requiring a corresponding increase in incoming solar energy.

The future of water
is a shared effort.
We welcome conversations with researchers, funders, public organisations, NGOs, universities and future deployment partners.
